#TwitterDown and #Twitterpocalypse were trending on Facebook and Instagram this morning. Why were they not trending on Twitter, which pioneered the popular use of hashtags?
Starting at about 3:20 AM EST, Twitter was giving an error message saying it was over capacity and was having an internal error. It was mostly back up and functioning by 5:00, allowing most Americans to tweet complaints that they had to wake up and go to work. There were sporadic issues for a few more hours.
Access to the microblogging service was unavailable on the web and through mobile devices as the API, which is what allows apps to communicate with the service, began failing. Twitter confirmed the service disruption at 4:00. The status of various APIs was upgraded to "performance issues" and limited access was restored to users, but many continued to have problems.
