White House's Reaction to Massive OPM Hack
After last week's massive and embarrassing hack of the Office of Personnel Management, the White House is telling agencies to do things that it should have already been doing.
- Installing software patches and updates
- Limit the number of people with admin access
- Keep logs of user activity
- Use antivirus software
- Use two-factor authentication
You know, the things we always tell people to do. IT security 101.
It's easy to get lazy with computer and network security. It can be a pain restarting computers for updates, changing passwords, being stingy with access and the like. But when the personal information of every federal employee is stolen by China, it's time to step up and start doing, at the very least, the basics.
