Verizon Customer Info for Sale
If you’re a Verizon customer, you might want to keep a close eye on your accounts. It’s being reported that hackers have infiltrated Verizon’s systems and are selling customer information online.
By taking advantage of a weakness in the company’s enterprise client portal, the thief was able to break in and steal customer contact information. Fortunately, they were unable to gain access to Verizon’s Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI), which contains information like the time, date, destination, and duration of calls and the customer’s subscribed network.
Though Verizon was aware of the security vulnerability, it was too late to stop the hacker from posting the customer contact information of 1.5 million customers online. Posted to an underground forum for cybercriminals, the thief was selling the data for $100,000, but was willing to break it into bundles of 100,000 for $10,000 each.
According to Verizon, once the breach was made apparent, they tracked down the vulnerability and fixed it. They are now in the process of notifying any customers who might have been impacted.
