Katy Perry's Twitter Hacked

Blog Post

We learned something new about Katy Perry. She apparently doesn't use two factor authentication.

At this point if Katy Perry were to throw a little shade at Taylor Swift, her 89 million followers probably wouldn’t pay that much attention, but when she gave her a shout out yesterday, people noticed. To no one’s surprise, Perry had been hacked and that tweet along several other more offensive ones were quickly taken down.

Among the tweets that were sent out was one pointing to a handle based out of Romania that read “haha follow @sw4ylol #hackersgonnahack.” That account sent out its first tweet on May 29 and posted a link to a Katy Perry song on SoundCloud that has since been taken down due to a copyright claim.

Katy Perry is the most followed person on Twitter, and while the social networking site has security protocols, anyone can be the victim of a hack. Celebrities are especially targeted with Britney Spears, Lea Michelle, Justin Bieber, and the US Central Command all having been hacked. A 2013 data breach that only recently came to light affected as many as 65 million users, forcing Twitter to require them to change their passwords.
