Fake Hot Chick Hackers

Blog Post

It's a good idea to make sure you don't open files from strangers, no matter what they say they look like, and especially if you're in charge of a security information.

A Syrian opposition fighter was duped by hackers pretending to be an attractive female on Skype.  During the course of their conversations, the hacker asked the victim what kind of device they were using to communicate so he could be sent the right kind of malware.  The faux female eventually sent the would-be suitor a "personal" picture containing malware, so that when it was opened, the victim's computer was compromised.

Almost eight gigabytes of information was compromised.  It included over 31,000 Skype conversations, about a quarter of a million messages, over 12,000 contacts, identification cards of refugees who had escaped to Turkey, details on the opposition's political structure, military plans and attack strategies.

Needless to say, no matter who you are or what position you hold, you should always be wary of opening files from people you meet online.  They might not be who they say they are.
