Discount Retailer Fred's Hacked
With all the news of governments being hacked or spying on its people and the like lately, it's almost refreshing to hearken back to the good old days of a few months ago when we got news seemingly every week of another chain store being hacked. Although there's really nothing good about it.
Fred's, a discount retail chain with 650 location, is looking into a hack that may have led to customer credit card information being stolen. As often happens in cases like this, a pattern of false credit card charges to banks and other financial institutions pointed to a compromised POS system. The trail leads to Fred's stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
Fred's says they looked into the matter as soon as they were aware of it and hired a computer forensics company to assist them. Stay tuned for more information as it emerges.
