Data Breach at Major Health Insurer
America's second largest health insurer, Anthem, Inc., reported yesterday that it had been hacked. Names, birth dates, member IDs, Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and employment information of tens of millions of subscribers may have been compromised.
Anthem's impacted plans or brands include Amerigroup, Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Caremore, DeCare, Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Healthlink and Unicare. Affected customers will receive mail letting them know what protections are being made available and other information.
Anthem announced in a statement that they had been targeted by a cyber attack that gave hackers a plethora of personal information about their customers. Though they say they haven't determined exactly how many people were affected, it's estimated by some that the number is in the tens of millions. Anthem also said they contacted a cyber security company as soon as they discovered the vulnerability, as well as the FBI.
