North Carolina Data Centers Hit with Ransomware

A giant in the electronic health records industry, Allscripts, reported that they were hit by a ransomware attack recently. Casualties in that attack include data centers in Raleigh and Charlotte, NC. The ransomware attack started in the wee hours of January 18 and had become a major incident by 6:00 that morning. Microsoft, Cisco, and Mandiant have all been involved in helping with the situation. Fortunately for Allscripts, incremental backups are scheduled for every night at 10:00, so not only did they have recent backups to restore their systems from, but they expect that hardly any data loss, if any at all, occurred. The ransomware appears to be a new strain of SamSam, the ransomware that extorted $55,000 in Bitcoin from Hancock Health recently.
